When you’re mindfully present in the moment, cooking can be a ritual, meant not only to feed the hungry but also to create a beautiful yet ephemeral spectacle of senses. Drawing inspiration from Tibetan and Japanese cultures CHAK PUR was designed for those who seek to elevate their food preparation process from a mere utility to a craft. The slender aluminum flutes are meant to contain your favorite spices ① and to be used not only while cooking but even more so when plating the final dish in diner’s view. To dispense, hold the flute in one hand, then gently glide the ceramic rod over the ridges and the vibration will accelerate the spice to controllably flow through the opening ② – a ritual like motion inspired by Tibetan art of laying sand mandalas. Only when pressed for time could one let go of the ceremonial gliding motion and simply just pour the spice as from any other vial.
To keep spices fresh, the flutes are sealed with cork plugs integral to the stand ③. The flutes are completely oblique and marked only with Japanese numerals safe from the prying eyes, making their content known only to the chef ④.
CHAK PUR taps into both Zero Waste and Aging themes.
Each flute is made of post-consumer aluminum, extruded, precisely machined, and anodized ⑤ - formed into a monolithic object that will serve anyone for a lifetime. The cold feel of the metal flutes is softened with recycled cork which provides an elegant and durable resting surface for the flutes. CHAK PUR not only gives a second life to trashed materials but transforms them into a functional object meant to last.
Then there’s the aspect of aging. With each stroke of the ceramic rod against the metal ridges, the anodized surface slowly wears and develops a gem-like shine - a beautiful testament to the times of mindful cooking ⑥.
